A beautiful brand and compelling founder story may open the conversation. Increasingly, buyers want evidence that consumers are already paying attention.

One of the clearest themes we are hearing in retailer conversations right now is a heightened focus on proof points. Buyers remain interested in discovering what is next, but a great product, polished deck and strong founder story are simply table stakes. They want to understand what is happening around the brand today: Is awareness growing? Is there meaningful DTC traction? Are press, social and search moving in the right direction? Is there a clear hero? Are existing retail doors productive? Are consumers coming back?

It represents an important evolution in what “retail ready” means. Securing distribution used to be viewed by many emerging brands as the moment that would create awareness. Today, retailers are increasingly looking for signs of awareness and demand before expanding distribution. They can accelerate momentum, introduce a brand to a much larger audience and provide powerful credibility—but they are less likely to take on the entire job of creating demand from scratch.

Our KSJC POV

Distribution should amplify demand, not be expected to manufacture it. And once distribution is secured, the retailer logo itself tells only part of the story. Door productivity, reorder cadence, customer acquisition, sell-through and the economics required to support the account matter far more. Whether you are speaking to a buyer or an investor, the question is increasingly moving from Where are you sold? to How well are you selling there?
