Minis, discovery sets, sampling and marketplaces are doing more than lowering the price of entry. They are changing the way consumers build relationships with brands.

Beauty has always been fueled by discovery, but consumers increasingly want to discover with less commitment. Minis, travel sizes, discovery sets, samples and digital marketplaces allow shoppers to experiment before committing to the full-size purchase—and that experimentation is becoming an important part of the experience rather than simply a step on the way to it. In prestige fragrance alone, Circana continues to see strength at both ends of the market, including double-digit momentum in minis alongside growth in premium formats.

The opportunity goes well beyond smaller sizes. Think of the emerging journey as social discovery → sample or mini → trial → full-size purchase → replenishment. Marketplaces can serve the same role digitally, giving emerging brands a lower-friction entry point with consumers and retailers alike. Physical retail is responding too: NIQ finds that sampling, trying new products and access to expertise remain important reasons consumers value prestige beauty stores as discovery destinations.

We are watching this play out in real time with concepts such as BeautySpace’s Little Luxuries, which builds an entire retail proposition around smaller formats and discovery. To us, the bigger story is not simply that minis are having a moment. Discovery itself is becoming a business model. For brands, the opportunity is to rethink the first transaction: sometimes the smartest way to create a full-size customer is to stop requiring her to begin with one.

Our KSJC POV

The first purchase no longer has to be the biggest purchase. Brands that create lower-friction ways to discover, trial and experience their products can build the trust that ultimately drives full-size conversion and long-term loyalty.
